HEAT LOSS IN ANIMALS

Some animals help regulate their body temperature by heat loss through their ears. Choose an animal, it can be an extinct animal, and research how it absorbs and emits heat.

Jack Rabbits are classified into the same family as rabbits and are of similar size, form and diet.

Characteristics

Picture
Hares are relatively small, furry, mammals with long ears, short tails and strong, large hind legs. They have 2 pairs of sharp front teeth, one pair on top and one pair on the bottom. They also have 2 peg teeth behind the top incisors. Their teeth are specifically adapted for gnawing and grow continuously throughout their lives.

Jack Rabbit using powerful hind legs are swift animals. The European brown hare  can run up to 56 km/h . The five species of Jack Rabbit found in central and western North America are able to run at 64 km/h , and can leap up to 3m at a time

LOCATION

Hare species are native to Africa, Eurasia, North America, and the Japanese archipelago.

DIET

The diet of the Hare is very similar to wild rabbits.
  • From spring to autumn, Hares eat grass, clover, wild flowers, weeds, and farm and garden crops. In winter, their diet shifts to buds, twigs, bark, conifer needles, and practically any green plant.
  • Hares re-ingest their droppings to further digest the material, a process called coprophagous. After returning to their shelters, they pass soft pellets containing undigested vegetation, and then eat these at a more leisurely pace, later passing hard pellets.
